Now that summer is here, you’ll likely want to spend time traveling, visiting the beach, or hanging out with family and friends. You might also get to enjoy plenty of tasty drinks along the way. However, some beverages can be harmful to your teeth over time. Read on to learn five summer oral health tips to preserve your pearly whites during summertime!

Tip #1: Drink Lots of Water

Water is essential for keeping you hydrated and maintaining a moist mouth. Similar to your saliva, drinking plenty of water throughout the day can help wash away debris, food particles, and plaque-causing bacteria. Not only can this keep infections at bay, but it can also improve your breath! You can try drinking from the tap as well since many water sources are fluoridated, which helps strengthen your enamel to resist cavities.

Tip #2: Avoid Carbonated Beverages

There are plenty of carbonated drinks that are tasty and enjoyable during summer. The problem is that they’re mostly acidic, meaning they can gradually wear down your enamel. This can increase your risk of tooth decay and infection. One way to prevent further complications is simply to reduce how often your drink carbonated beverages.

Tip #3: Use a Straw Often

If you must drink sodas or other carbonated liquids, then you should at least use a straw. This will allow the beverage to pass by your teeth with minimal contact. You can also aim to finish your drink as quickly as you can to avoid sipping it for prolonged periods.

Tip #4: Try Drinking Tea

Drinking tea is also healthy for your smile. This beverage consists of compounds that block bacteria, which can fight or slow down issues like tooth decay and gum disease. Be sure not to add any sugar to it, as this can excite the natural bacteria in your mouth.

Tip #5: Visit Your Dentist

Before heading out for summer vacation, it’s a good idea to schedule a checkup and cleaning with your dentist. They’ll assess your oral health, offer treatment for any developing issues they may detect, and thoroughly polish your pearly whites before you leave. You’ll be able to enjoy the season knowing your teeth are in great condition!

With these few tips, you can kick back this summer while maintaining healthy teeth. And if you have any questions along the way, your dentist will be happy to answer them.
