Spring Cleaning: 3 Ways to Boost Your Dental Health

March is just around the corner, making it the perfect time of year to open your windows and enjoy the fresh air, or take advantage of the longer days to declutter your home. However, don’t forget that your smile deserves some spring cleaning, too!

Soon, it’ll be time to enjoy Easter celebrations, graduation ceremonies, and other momentous occasions, and it’s only natural to want to look and feel your best for them. Thankfully, there are several ways that you can enhance your dental condition and appearance to make the most of the season. Continue reading to learn 3 ideas for improving your grin this spring!

Tip #1: Get a New Toothbrush

Did you know that the American Dental Association recommends replacing your toothbrush every two to three months? The bristles tend to wear down over time and can also trap unwanted bacteria that you reintroduce to your mouth every time you try to clean it.

If you haven’t replaced your toothbrush or electric toothbrush head since the new year, it’s time for an upgrade! Most stores and pharmacies carry many options, so you can find the right bristle strength that works for you.  Also, don’t forget to wash your toothbrush holder. It also accumulates germs over time that can contaminate your new brush. Simply wash it with warm water and soap to disinfect it before drying it off to use it normally.

Tip #2: Consider Cosmetics

If you have events coming up, it’s only natural to want to smile confidently for photos with family and friends. Unfortunately, if your grin has flaws like cavities, chips, cracks, or other issues, you might worry about being judged for how you look or remain tight-lipped rather than enjoy the present moment.

Meanwhile, your dentist offers several services intended to give you a beautiful smile you can be proud of. Whether you hope to achieve a lighter shade or want to hide fractures, misshapen teeth, slight gaps, mild overcrowding, or stubborn stains, they can help you achieve your aesthetic goals.

Tip #3: Schedule an Appointment

The ADA also recommends visiting your dentist every six months for a routine checkup and cleaning to prevent potential problems and preserve your oral health. Despite this, only an estimated 45% of American adults has attended a dental appointment in the last year.

Although brushing and flossing twice daily are essential for removing plaque and bacteria that contribute to tooth decay and gum disease, there’s no guarantee that you won’t develop an issue. It’s possible to get cavities between teeth, behind your molars, or beneath your gums, where they may not be visible.

Your dentist has the experience and equipment necessary to identify and address any areas of concern, protecting your smile this spring and beyond.
